FAQ
I’m brand new to Pilates, where should I start?
In your initial consultation, we will discuss any pathologies (pre or existing), specific goals your wanting to achieve. A postural/movement assessment and tests will be done specific to your injury and/or goals. It’s here where we will establish/refine the Principals of Pilates using some Matwork, Reformer and some other props on hand. Contact studio@atoem.com.au to book your initial consultation.

What do I need/how do I get ready for my first class?
For the class, unless specified otherwise, all that is required is a Yoga Mat, a small towel, some warm water (preferably warm), and a comfortable space to train in for the hour! Other options for props are Pilates Toning Balls, Pilates Circle, TheraBand, and Yoga Blocks. These are discretionary, we can use these during sessions for some exercises if you have them, though they’re not necessary. Any questions on props, feel free to ask!
Why should I have warm water?
In Chinese Medicine, it’s said that drinking warm water allows our system to maintain the warmth of the digestive system, allowing us to more efficiently breakdown our food. Cold water consumes the warms of our body, giving us less energy and “contracting” our internal, leading to overall stiffness of the muscles.
What if I have an injury?
Prior to attending the class you will be sent an Initial Health Questionnaire, all information is kept confidential and we ask that you take the time to fill this out specifically. This will ensure we are able to accommodate for any injuries/preventions going on in your body and maintain the flow of the class for other participants. If you have been advised by your doctor to not exercise then you must not attend the class. The most important thing is to listen to your body.
Can I bring a friend?
We have decided to maintain small numbers in the classes, in order to offer everyone who has booked the most value and care possible in a virtual format. Semi Private sessions are available to book.
How much is too much?
If you’re new to Pilates, we recommend 3-4 classes a week. We are passionate that Pilates is a Practice, and like any sport, the more that you do, the more bodily awareness you will gain and improvements you will make. Whether that be for professional reasons or injury rehabilitation (unless specified). Physiologically, when certain muscles in our body contract, these muscles send signals to our brain; movement is important for overall mental/physical health and well-being, and can be found in many different ways, Pilates being a really good option for one of them!
How can I cancel or pause a package?
You can cancel or pause any packages you’ve purchased at any time you like. Please note, all packages expire 5 weeks from the start of your first class, or from the date of pause. Package cancellations or pauses can only be processed via email to studio@atoem.com.au. If you’re planning to go away, or you’ve been advised by your doctor or health professional to not exercise, you’ll need to email us at studio@atoem.com.au.
